Description For Engineering Program Manager, Solar

Tesla's Energy Engineering group is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Program Manager for their Solar program. This cross-functional role involves coordinating among various groups within and outside of Tesla, including design engineering, manufacturing engineering and operations, supply chain, compliance, reliability, and field operations. The position requires managing both existing and new design engineering initiatives, driving the development of new product programs, and managing changes to existing programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with multiple teams to identify and scope projects for solar and residential product design and manufacturing
  • Managing product cost reduction and quality improvement initiatives
  • Creating and maintaining project schedules
  • Prioritizing engineering work based on risk, resources, and potential return
  • Identifying innovative solutions to overcome obstacles
  • Defining processes to enhance risk and change management

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven experience in managing engineering projects for mass-produced products
  • Experience with the engineering product design cycle and manufacturing processes
  • Expertise in project scheduling and communication
  • Strong understanding of Bill of Material hierarchy and product release cycles
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and inspire confidence across management levels
  • A degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent experience

The position is based in the Bay Area (Fremont) with some travel to manufacturing facilities in California or Nevada as needed.

  • Proven experience in managing engineering projects for mass-produced products
  • Experience with the engineering product design cycle, manufacturing line setup, and ramp-up to mass production
  • Expertise in creating, maintaining, and communicating project schedules
  • Strong understanding of multilevel Bill of Material hierarchy, including hardware and software components
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the product release cycle, particularly in relation to the creation and change management of parts and BOM structures
  • Ability to inspire confidence across multiple layers of management, from executives to associates
  • Detail-oriented with excellent record-keeping and organizational skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, production, and supply chain teams
  • Degree in an Engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or a related field) or equivalent experience
