Description For Engineering Technician, Passive Safety

Tesla's Austin Passive Safety Test team is seeking an Engineering Technician to join their dynamic environment focused on vehicle engineering development, regulatory certification, and consumer protection crash testing. This role is integral to Tesla's commitment to vehicle safety and innovation.

The position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in Tesla's state-of-the-art facilities, where you'll be responsible for preparing and executing various safety tests that directly impact vehicle development and certification. You'll work alongside Test Engineers and other specialists in a collaborative team environment, focusing on Vehicle & Mechanical systems, Instrumentation & ATD (crash test dummies), Fabrication, and Imaging.

This role is perfect for someone who combines technical expertise with hands-on mechanical skills and attention to detail. You'll be involved in critical aspects of vehicle safety testing, from installing sophisticated data acquisition equipment to preparing vehicles for various test scenarios. The position requires both technical proficiency and physical capabilities, as you'll be working directly with vehicles and test equipment.

Responsibilities For Engineering Technician, Passive Safety

  • Prepare test vehicles according to test configurations
  • Install data acquisition equipment and sensors
  • Installation/removal of vehicle test fixtures and lab equipment
  • Maintain sensor library and coordinate calibration activities
  • Design and create custom brackets, wire harnesses and fixtures
  • Setup and deploy high-speed cameras and lighting for test setups
  • Maintain and repair test equipment
  • Prepare vehicle components for flammability testing
  • Prepare and repair test vehicles for driving and durability tests

Requirements For Engineering Technician, Passive Safety

  • Wide variety of experience diagnosing, repairing, and replacing components on passenger vehicles
  • Ability to operate hand/power tools and shop equipment
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in tight spaces
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Tesla-specific diagnostics tools)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to operate diagnostic scan tools, scopes, meters, and test equipment
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Go-getter attitude and desire to build new skills
