Description For Engineering Technician, Reliability Engineering, Energy

Tesla's Energy Reliability Engineering team is seeking detail-oriented Engineering Technicians to contribute to the development and improvement of Tesla's energy products and systems. This role combines hands-on technical work with engineering fundamentals and scientific data analysis.

The position offers a unique opportunity to work directly with Test Engineers in validating world-class products and pushing the boundaries of functionality and reliability. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, adaptable to change, and comfortable working in ambiguous situations. The role requires exceptional attention to detail and the highest quality standards.

As an Engineering Technician, you'll be responsible for instrumenting and testing engineering prototypes, designing and constructing test equipment, and maintaining lab safety standards. You'll work with cutting-edge environmental test chambers and integrate various systems including AC/DC voltages, structural components, and CAN protocols. The role involves extensive collaboration with multiple engineering teams, including reliability, design, and integration teams.

Key technical skills required include mechanical fabrication, experience with electronics lab tools, and proficiency in making wiring harnesses. You should have a strong foundation in physics and engineering fundamentals, combined with excellent documentation and communication skills. The position offers exposure to Tesla's innovative energy systems and the opportunity to contribute to their continuous improvement.

The compensation package is competitive, ranging from $24.40 to $65.40 per hour, plus cash and stock awards. The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, with potential travel to other Tesla facilities.

Responsibilities For Engineering Technician, Reliability Engineering, Energy

  • Instrument and test engineering prototypes, including data acquisition and processing
  • Design and construct new test equipment and improve existing fixtures
  • Maintain high standard of safety and organization in lab
  • Maintain lab scale Environmental Test Chambers
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to identify and resolve mechanical & electrical issues
  • Integrate systems including AC/DC voltages, structural components, coolant, CAN, and scripting
  • Provide detailed documentation during tests and inspections
  • Communicate technical questions and findings
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot test setup errors and failures
  • Travel to support lab expansion at facilities in Fremont, Gigafactories and future locations

Requirements For Engineering Technician, Reliability Engineering, Energy

  • Mechanical fabrication skills and machine shop experience
  • Mechanical aptitude for electromechanical systems
  • Experience with electronics lab tools including AC/DC meters, data acquisition
  • Experience making wiring harnesses, soldering, crimping, following wiring diagrams
  • Strong understanding of physics and engineering fundamentals
  • Methodical and diligent work approach
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Self-directing ability
  • Excellent documentation and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel
  • Ability to troubleshoot Environmental chambers and equipment
