Description For Internship, Mechanical Design Engineer, Tesla Bot (Summer 2025)

Tesla is offering an exciting Summer 2025 internship opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to work on the innovative Tesla Bot project. This position, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, provides a unique chance to contribute to cutting-edge robotics development at one of the world's leading technology companies.

The role combines mechanical engineering, robotics, and advanced manufacturing principles, making it ideal for students pursuing degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or Mechatronics. As an intern, you'll be involved in crucial aspects of the Tesla Bot's development, from CAD design and FEA analysis to manufacturing support and test equipment design.

The position offers hands-on experience with state-of-the-art technology and tools, including CATIA, SolidWorks, and various programming languages. You'll work directly on developing and optimizing mechanical components, creating production-ready designs, and contributing to the advancement of humanoid robotics technology.

Responsibilities For Internship, Mechanical Design Engineer, Tesla Bot (Summer 2025)

  • Develop designs in CAD for both detailed parts and master model assemblies
  • Perform tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other simulations
  • Create 2D drawings for high-volume production and inspection methods
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with suppliers
  • Design automated fixtures and calibration equipment for advanced robotics products
  • Own the mechanical design of test equipment from concept to deployment
  • Create and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or related field
  • Proficiency in designing parts and assemblies using 3D modeling software (CATIA preferred)
  • Experience drafting engineering drawings and conducting tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Strong intuition for structural optimization supported by FEA/hand calculations
  • Good electrical foundation with knowledge about gearbox, motor, inverter, wire harness design
  • Programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python
  • Ability to prototype using fabrication, machining, and basic electronics/coding abilities
  • Exposure to test systems, production machinery and hobbyist electronics
  • Exposure to SolidWorks, Altium, Golang and Python
