Description For Internship, Mechanical Engineer, Cell Engineering (Summer 2025)

Tesla is seeking a Mechanical Design Intern to join their innovative Cell Engineering team for Summer 2025. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge vehicle battery products at one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturers. The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and requires a minimum 12-week, full-time commitment.

The intern will be immersed in Tesla's fast-paced environment, working directly on critical challenges related to battery cost and performance. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams including PM, Controls, manufacturing, and technicians to design and deploy specialized development equipment. The role involves hands-on experience with 3D CAD modeling, detailed drawings, and mechanical builds.

The ideal candidate should be pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with strong technical skills in CAD software, mechanical design, and analysis tools. They should demonstrate proficiency in areas such as GD&T, Python, and Matlab, along with knowledge of battery cell design principles.

Responsibilities For Internship, Mechanical Engineer, Cell Engineering (Summer 2025)

  • Design and deploy specialized development equipment for vehicle battery products
  • Work on cross-functional teams with PM, Controls, manufacturing, and technicians
  • Prepare 3D CAD models and detailed drawings
  • Support mechanical builds and production machinery
  • Collaborate with various engineering disciplines
  • Develop Li-ion cell components and systems
  • Conduct basic analyses (FEA, Excel, MATLAB, scripting)
  • Manage mechanical BOMs and technical specifications

Requirements For Internship, Mechanical Engineer, Cell Engineering (Summer 2025)

Python
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Proficient in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred, CATIA, AutoCAD, 3DX)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Machining & Fabrication Experience
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience in Matlab, Python, CFD Packages, Structural FEA packages
  • Experience in electromechanical design and analysis
  • Familiarity with international technical standards
  • Basic knowledge of Lithium-ion battery cell and battery design
  • Strong technical communication skills
