Description For Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, Automated Test Equipment, Manufacturing Test Engineering

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated hands-on Mechanical Engineer for a position in the Manufacturing Test Engineering group. This role is part of the "machine that builds the machine" and focuses on creating robust, beautiful, data-centric production testing equipment for Tesla's power electronic components in vehicles, stationary storage, and charging products.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Architecting automated test equipment and producing detailed CAD models
  • Leading conceptual equipment development
  • Analyzing system constraints and proposing innovative solutions
  • Supporting building, debugging, and validation efforts
  • Conducting detailed testing and validation of installed machinery
  • Performing on-site and off-site acceptance testing
  • Mentoring junior mechanical engineers

The role requires 8+ years of experience as a Mechanical/Mechatronics/Automation Engineer, a degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, and expertise in various areas such as solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, and CAD/CAE software.

  • Architect automated test equipment and produce detailed CAD models
  • Lead conceptual equipment development
  • Review and provide feedback on performance, design simplicity, robustness, assembly, and installation
  • Analyze system constraints and propose innovative solutions
  • Support building, debugging, validation, and equipment duplication efforts
  • Conduct detailed testing and validation of installed machinery
  • Perform on-site and off-site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of test equipment
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineers

Requirements For Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, Automated Test Equipment, Manufacturing Test Engineering

  • 8+ years of experience as Mechanical/Mechatronics/Automation Engineer
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience transitioning products and processes from prototype to production
  • Knowledge in solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, dynamics, material selection, prototyping, testing methods, machining, and fabrication processes
  • Experience with test systems, production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM, and Ansys, or similar CAD/CAE software
  • Experience in preparing technical requirements and specifications for automated equipment
  • Experience in mentoring mechanical engineers and project management
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%
