Description For Mechanical Design Engineer, Aerodynamic Prototype, New Programs

Tesla's Aerodynamic Prototype team is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their innovative vehicle development efforts. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge electric vehicles, focusing on aerodynamic optimization for efficiency, range, and wind noise reduction. As part of a small, highly motivated team, you'll collaborate closely with Design and engineering groups to achieve maximum performance while maintaining other vehicle attributes.

The position involves designing and creating wind tunnel models, executing build plans, and working with various stakeholders including model makers, machinists, and aerodynamicists. You'll be responsible for performing technical calculations, developing novel airflow management features, and continuously improving processes.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in mechanical engineering or aerospace, with particular skills in CAD software and rapid prototyping. You'll need excellent communication abilities to work effectively across teams and manage tight deadlines while maintaining high engineering standards.

Responsibilities For Mechanical Design Engineer, Aerodynamic Prototype, New Programs

  • Design and create build plans for wind tunnel models
  • Identify and secure resources to build test properties
  • Execute build plans by designing, releasing and coordinating test properties
  • Perform hand calculations and FEA to justify mechanical design decisions
  • Assist in developing and validating airflow management features
  • Work with engineers, suppliers, and fabricators to create and test wind tunnel models
  • Innovate, develop and improve processes continuously

Requirements For Mechanical Design Engineer, Aerodynamic Prototype, New Programs

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Aerospace Engineering
  • Expertise in complex surface geometry creation in CAD software (preferably CATIA)
  • Strong understanding of rapid prototyping methods
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Willing to travel 10% of working days
  • Experience with wind tunnel testing (preferred)
  • Experience with track testing and data acquisition (preferred)
