Description For Mechanical Design Engineer, Power Electronics

Tesla's Power Electronics team is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their elite group of engineers working on cutting-edge power converters used across Tesla's entire product range. This role combines various aspects of mechanical engineering, from statics and dynamics to fluids and thermals, requiring a multi-disciplinary approach including electrical and magnetic physics knowledge.

As a team member, you'll be responsible for designing world-class power converters utilized in Vehicle, Energy Storage, Solar, and Manufacturing applications. The position offers hands-on experience with prototype builds and engineering testing, focusing on structural, thermal, and environmental aspects of converter components.

The role demands strong design skills and a first-principles approach to problem-solving. You'll work on detailed designs of custom magnetic components and own projects from conception through mass production. Responsibilities For Mechanical Design Engineer, Power Electronics

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies including plastics, sheet metal, heat sinks, and magnetic components
  • Perform mechanical design analysis including thermal, CFD, structural, and design for assembly
  • Solve electronics packaging issues including electrical isolation and thermal management
  • Develop engineering test plans
  • Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions
  • Assist in engineering prototype builds
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for product development

Requirements For Mechanical Design Engineer, Power Electronics

Python
  • Knowledge of GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability
  • Experience using CATIA V5 and/or V6
  • Experience with PLM systems and BOM structuring
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Python and ANYSYS
  • Experience with environmental and safety standards for automotive products
  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing processes
  • Familiarity with PCBAs and PCBA components
