Description For Mechanical Design Engineer, Prototype, New Programs

Tesla's New Programs Engineering team is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to work on the front-end of vehicle design and development. This role involves creating prototypes for engineering development, interacting with cross-functional teams from Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Powertrain Engineering. The position requires expertise in product design and a first principles approach to problem-solving.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting vehicle engineers and prototype fabricators in defining manufacturing strategies and design criteria
  • Collaborating on concept development using CAD and FEA
  • Rapidly designing and manufacturing limited volume prototype vehicles
  • Owning vehicle subsystems for concept prototype and mule builds

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in product development
  • Hands-on experience in designing electro-mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping methodologies
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software and FEA
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
