Description For Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Electrode Calendering & Lamination

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Sr. Manufacturing Engineer for Electrode Calendering & Lamination to create manufacturing equipment and processes for cutting-edge battery products. This role is crucial to Tesla's mission, as battery development is at the heart of the company and directly addresses the central challenge of electric vehicles – battery cost.

The ideal candidate will work in a fast-paced, demanding environment with a highly motivated team on extremely challenging projects. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Driving the ramp of new production lines
  2. Designing and developing manufacturing processes and equipment
  3. Generating and maintaining documentation
  4. Developing manufacturing metrics and implementing metrology
  5. Designing production workstation layouts
  6. Driving Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  7. Collaborating with external equipment integrators
  8. Validating and characterizing new equipment
  9. Managing equipment installation and commissioning
  10. Creating manufacturing introductions and delivering training

The role requires a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering (10+ years preferred). Expertise in developing automated manufacturing equipment, 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), and experience in high-volume manufacturing involving areas such as roll-to-roll polymer extrusion, calendering/pressing, or battery manufacturing is highly desired.

Responsibilities For Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Electrode Calendering & Lamination

  • Drive ramp of new production lines by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system
  • Design and develop manufacturing processes and equipment
  • Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOMs, spare parts, PFMEAs, control plans, and process flow charts
  • Develop manufacturing metrics and key performance indices
  • Design the layout of production workstations for product flow, ergonomics, and efficiency
  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and develop specifications for custom automation equipment
  • Collaborate with and manage external equipment integrators on custom automation equipment development
  • Validate and characterize new equipment and fixtures for production implementation
  • Generate machine qualification checklists and manage the install, commissioning, and start-up of new equipment
  • Create manufacturing introduction and deliver training to Operations and Maintenance Technicians

Requirements For Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Electrode Calendering & Lamination

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering (10+ years preferred)
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes from prototype to mass production
  • Experience developing automated manufacturing equipment, including fixturing and tooling in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred, Catia is a plus)
  • Experience drawing machine or production line layouts in 2D CAD (AutoCAD preferred)
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment (APQP is a plus)
  • Extensive project management experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally
  • Experience in high volume manufacturing involving one or more of these areas: roll to roll polymer extrusion, winding/rewinding, calendering/pressing, lamination, web handling, stamping, steel rolling/milling, airplane/rocket engine hydraulics, mechanics, battery manufacturing (li-ion, electrode, cathode, anode or other similar chemistries)
