Description For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Automated Test Equipment, Manufacturing Test Engineering

We seek a highly motivated hands-on Mechanical Engineer for a position in the Manufacturing Test Engineering group as part of the "machine that builds the machine". The group is focused on creating robust, beautiful, data-centric production testing equipment for Tesla's power electronic components in vehicles, stationary storage and charging products.

The ideal candidates take pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail, and appreciate an environment where superior work is encouraged, noticed, and rewarded. The candidates look forward to learning an incredible amount on the job, excited to share the knowledge and mentor engineers, and do not shy away from tremendous levels of responsibility.

What You'll Do:

  • Architect automated test equipment, produce detailed-level CAD models, pneumatic diagrams, and verify designs using structural and thermal FEA and CFD
  • Lead conceptual equipment development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits
  • Review, identify, and provide feedback on performance, design simplicity, robustness, assembly, and installation
  • Analyze system constraints and propose innovative solutions
  • Support building, debugging, validation and equipment duplication efforts, and fine-tune equipment for release to production
  • Conduct detailed testing and validation of installed machinery to ensure robustness and quality
  • Perform on-site and off-site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of test equipment
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineers to deliver high quality automation equipment

What You'll Bring:

  • 6+ years of experience as Mechanical/Mechatronics/Automation Engineer with focus in automation, machine design, robotics, and product development
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience transitioning products and processes from prototype to production
  • Knowledge in solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, dynamics, material selection, prototyping, testing methods, everyday machining, and fabrication processes
  • Exposure to a wide variety of test systems, production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment
  • Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to interact and collaborate effectively with other engineering disciplines
  • Versed in SolidWorks, PDM, and Ansys, or similar CAD/CAE software
  • Experience in preparing technical requirements and specifications documents for automated equipment
  • Experience in mentoring mechanical engineers and project management is a plus
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%

Join Tesla and be part of the team that's revolutionizing the automotive and energy industries. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology and contribute to the development of innovative testing equipment for Tesla's products.
