Tesla's Drive Systems Engineering Team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of geartrain components for Tesla Semi Truck product lines. This role combines innovative engineering with practical implementation, focusing on creating world-class drive units that excel in performance, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability. The position offers an opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in the electric vehicle industry, specifically for Tesla's semi-truck division.

The role involves comprehensive responsibility for the entire lifecycle of geartrain components, from initial concept development through to production launch. Responsibilities For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Geartrain, Drive Systems, Semi

  • Develop concepts for geartrain related components to minimize part count, cost, and complexity
  • Design and analysis of geartrain components including rotating shafts, gears, differentials
  • Design, coordinate, and execute system level and component level tests
  • Risk assessment and root cause analysis for failures
  • Provide technical guidance to cross functional teams
  • Work with Suppliers for process improvements
  • Work with firmware, design, and test engineering teams
  • Perform CAE analysis for geartrain components
  • 2D and 3D modeling utilizing CAD software
  • Mentor entry-level Engineers and Interns

Requirements For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Geartrain, Drive Systems, Semi

  • Experience in rotating machinery design, analysis, tests and failure analysis
  • Understanding of bearings, gears and gearbox lubrication
  • Experience with differentials, actuators, clutches, axle disconnect systems
  • Deep understanding of ANSI Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Expert in 3D modeling (CATIA preferred)
  • Experience in CAE analysis software
  • Experience launching automotive designs from concept through production
