Tesla's New Programs Engineering team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their innovative vehicle development division. This role sits at the forefront of Tesla's future vehicle design and development, working in an iterative environment to study, simulate, build, and prove next-generation vehicles. The position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge automotive technology while collaborating with various teams including Interior/Exterior Design, Human Factors & Ergonomics, and Vehicle Engineering production teams.

The role demands expertise in vehicle systems and attributes, focusing on designing and delivering complete systems rather than just components. You'll be responsible for owning specific vehicle systems, from initial concept through prototype development, while working closely with chassis, powertrain, body-in-white, and other critical vehicle systems teams. Responsibilities For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, New Vehicle Architecture, New Programs Engineer

  • Own a specific vehicle system (chassis, seating, mechanisms, lighting) and/or integration of various systems during initial development
  • Architect, mature and develop vehicle systems from initial product scope through prototype level components
  • Capture, document, and trade-off internal and external requirements
  • Generate concept proposals aligned with vehicle program scope and attribute requirements
  • Down select solutions based on vehicle attributes, system cost and weight
  • Develop CATIA 3D proposed system solutions
  • Design, release, and build components for early-phase physical prototyping
  • Innovate and improve engineering development processes

Requirements For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, New Vehicle Architecture, New Programs Engineer

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Broad experience with automotive systems and prototyping
  • First-principles knowledge of vehicle attributes
  • Proficiency in CAD software
  • Strong understanding of GD&T
  • Ability to interpret CAE results
  • Must be proactive in improving processes
  • Detail-oriented with effective documentation skills
  • Excellent communicator with good time management
