Description For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Structures, Drive Systems, Semi

Tesla is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their innovative team working on structures and drive systems for the Tesla Semi program. This role is part of a small, fast-paced team of capable Engineers specializing in architecture layouts and detail design of mass-efficient castings and forgings like gearboxes and motor housings.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of electric vehicle technology, specifically in the heavy-duty truck segment. As a senior engineer, you'll be responsible for leading and contributing to the design and development of semi-truck and heavy-duty transmission designs and architectures. The role requires expertise in structural castings, system-level design, and volume production experience.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in heavy-duty/Class 8 transmission design, with a strong focus on structural castings and system-level design ownership. Proficiency in 3D design software, particularly Catia V5, is strongly preferred. The role demands excellent attention to detail, strong understanding of GD&T, and great time management skills.

Responsibilities For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Structures, Drive Systems, Semi

  • Bring leadership and contribute to the design and development of semi-truck and heavy-duty transmission designs and architectures
  • Work with vehicle and production line integration teams
  • Work with reliability teams to diagnose and address and improve designs
  • Develop designs with focus on assembly at volume
  • Own the detail design of individual components
  • Work with analysis and test team to define specs
  • Engage and drive the project team for on-time delivery

Requirements For Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Structures, Drive Systems, Semi

  • Heavy duty/Class 8 transmission design with focus on structural castings
  • System level design ownership
  • 3D experience or Catia V5 experience strongly preferred
  • Casting design for volume production
  • Detail 3D and 2D release of Iron and aluminum casting, forgings, and molded parts
  • Component and sub-system level structural CAE experience
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Great time management and self-motivation
