Description For Staff Electrical Engineer, Inverter, Semi

Tesla is seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer to join their Drive Inverter team, which is responsible for designing the critical power electronics that power Tesla's electric vehicles. This role represents an opportunity to work at the forefront of electric vehicle technology, developing high-performance traction inverters that deliver hundreds of kilowatts of power from the battery to the motor.

The position offers a comprehensive scope of work, from initial design specifications to high-volume manufacturing implementation. You'll be responsible for end-to-end ownership of new inverter PCBA designs, including architecture development, schematic capture, PCB layout, and validation. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, firmware, test, and reliability engineers, ensuring successful product implementation in Tesla's vehicles.

As a Staff Electrical Engineer, you'll work with cutting-edge technology in power electronics, utilizing your expertise in digital and analog circuit design, high voltage systems, and power supply design. The position requires strong technical skills in PCB design using Altium, embedded firmware, and automotive networking protocols. You'll also be involved in complex debugging at the vehicle level and executing high voltage and high current validation of new inverter designs.

The compensation package is highly competitive, ranging from $100,160 to $225,840 annually, plus cash and stock awards. Responsibilities For Staff Electrical Engineer, Inverter, Semi

  • End-to-end ownership of new inverter PCBA designs including specifications, architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring up, validation, and overseeing reliability and functional testing
  • Collaboration with cross functional teams (mechanical, firmware, test, reliability etc.) to see products through high volume manufacturing
  • Design and execute high voltage and high current validation of new inverter designs
  • Debug complex component interactions at the vehicle level

Requirements For Staff Electrical Engineer, Inverter, Semi

Python
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline with 5+ years of professional experience or equivalent experience
  • Digital and analog circuit design, including high voltage circuits or power supply design
  • Printed circuit board design (Altium) and initial bring-up: debugging, soldering, wiring, mechanical assembly
  • Familiarity with embedded firmware, microcontrollers and their peripherals, python scripting or similar
  • Familiarity with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies
  • Experience with power semiconductors (MOSFETs, IGBTs)
  • Knowledge of electric motors, thermal design, and/or mechanical design
  • Experience with automotive networking (CAN, LIN, Ethernet)
  • Basic control theory, including importance of sensor bandwidths, filtering
  • Automation of lab equipment (GPIB/SCPI/VISA)
