Description For Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Drive Inverter

Tesla's Vehicle Power Electronics group is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join their Drive Inverter design team. This role combines mechanical engineering expertise with electronics knowledge to push the boundaries of power electronics design.

The position requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals, including heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, and structural design. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in designing and building mechanical assemblies, with a proven track record of bringing products to volume production.

As a Staff Mechanical Engineer, you'll be responsible for the design and 3D modeling of mechanical packaged semiconductor components and assemblies. Your work will involve complex analysis including thermal, CFD, structural, and design considerations for assembly and testing. You'll tackle challenging electronics packaging issues related to electrical isolation, sealing, thermal management, and EMI.

Responsibilities For Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Drive Inverter

  • Design and 3D modeling of mechanical packaged semiconductor components and assemblies
  • Mechanical design analysis including thermal, CFD, structural, design for assembly, and design for test
  • Solve electronics packaging issues
  • Develop engineering test plans for designs
  • Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions
  • Assist in engineering prototype builds
  • Collaborate with other teams to take designs from concept through production

Requirements For Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Drive Inverter

Python
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 8 years of related industry experience
  • Experience managing direct reports or leading a small team
  • Deep understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing processes
  • Proficiency in 3D mechanical design tools (CATIA)
  • Working knowledge of Matlab and/or Python
  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals
