Description For Technical Artist, Simulation, Self-Driving

Tesla's Autopilot team is seeking a Technical Artist specializing in Simulation for their Self-Driving technology division. This role combines artistic creativity with technical expertise to develop photorealistic, procedural environments that test and improve Tesla's Full Self Driving capabilities. You'll be instrumental in creating virtual worlds that train neural networks by simulating real-world driving conditions.

Working alongside artists, technical artists, and simulation engineers, you'll expand the virtual testing environment to include diverse regions, variations, biomes, and drivable topologies. Your work will directly impact the safety and effectiveness of Tesla's self-driving technology by creating realistic simulations that help train and validate the autonomous driving systems.

The ideal candidate brings a unique blend of technical and artistic skills, with expertise in tools like Houdini, Maya, and Python. You'll need strong procedural modeling capabilities, understanding of ML concepts, and experience with automated production pipelines. Responsibilities For Technical Artist, Simulation, Self-Driving

  • Create large, detailed road networks and associated assets in a procedural manner using Houdini, Maya and in-house tools
  • Utilize proprietary fleet data sources, neural network outputs and 3rd party spatial data
  • Provide realistic environments and assets based on data requirements and Full Self Driving product direction
  • Improve and automate asset creation workflows with AP Simulation team

Requirements For Technical Artist, Simulation, Self-Driving

Python
Linux
  • Portfolio and/or code examples demonstrating large-scale generation of procedural environments
  • Excellent knowledge of Houdini, Python and Vex
  • Extensive experience with automated 3D production pipelines and CI
  • Understanding of high performance assets in relation to ray traced rendering
  • Solid analytical & spatial math skills
  • Experience with Git, GitHub Automation, Linux and Docker
  • Proficiency with C++ and game/simulation engine programming
  • Understanding of vision-based ML and experience with NN training
