Tesla's Vehicle Motion Controls team is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge control algorithms that define the exceptional vehicle dynamics of Tesla vehicles. This senior-level position focuses on designing and implementing physics-oriented control algorithms for various vehicle systems including brake, suspension, steering, aero, and powertrain systems. The team has achieved significant milestones, including the industry-first Steer-by-Wire and Rear-Steer system on the Cybertruck, Track Mode for the Plaid Model S, and Tesla's proprietary stability control systems.
The role demands expertise in both theoretical understanding and practical implementation of control systems, combining advanced mathematics with real-world engineering. You'll work closely with multiple teams, from Chassis Hardware to Self Driving teams, ensuring seamless integration of control systems across Tesla's vehicle lineup. The compensation package is highly competitive, ranging from $133,440 to $355,920 annually, plus additional benefits and stock awards. Responsibilities For Vehicle Dynamics Controls Engineer, Vehicle Controls
- Develop control-oriented models of chassis systems for analysis and estimation
- Evaluate novel subsystems related to vehicle motion to inform product architecture decisions
- Work with Vehicle Dynamics Engineers on sensing, actuation, and algorithm designs
- Develop and implement control algorithms to maximize system capability and flexibility
- Develop and implement estimation and monitoring algorithms for system safety and reliability
- Test, debug, and calibrate algorithms in simulation and in car
- Ensure stability and performance using SIL and HIL tools
- Advance the state-of-the-art in vehicle motion control technology
Requirements For Vehicle Dynamics Controls Engineer, Vehicle Controls
- Excellent background in first principles linear systems analysis, state-estimation, and control design
- Excellent fundamental understanding of vehicle dynamics
- Demonstrated ability to design, analyze, implement, test, and debug control systems
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and work in fast-paced environment
- Basic understanding of electric drivetrains and chassis actuators
- Proficiency with Matlab/Simulink/Python
- Basic proficiency with C/C++
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or equivalent
- Real world experience with vehicle dynamics performance characteristics (preferred)
- Expertise in advanced control and estimation techniques (preferred)
