Description For Manufacturing Engineer I

Thorlabs is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer I to join their Advanced Photonics (TAP) Business Unit in Newton, NJ. This role is crucial in overseeing and improving production processes across various departments including Optical Shop, Coating, Fiber Draw, Fiber Cabling, Opto-Mechanical Assembly, and Metrology.

The position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge photonics technology while implementing lean manufacturing and six sigma standards. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you'll be responsible for identifying and solving production issues, participating in design reviews, and ensuring smooth transfer of new products to production.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Physics or Engineering, with at least 2 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, quality improvement tools, and familiarity with optics fabrication is essential. The role requires strong attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities For Manufacturing Engineer I

  • Identify and solve manufacturing issues for new and existing products
  • Plan production layouts for lean manufacturing and six sigma standards
  • Participate in design reviews with engineering department
  • Conduct training to improve manufacturing and testing processes
  • Interface with engineering and operations for new product releases
  • Collaborate with RMA and service departments for customer returns
  • Create and maintain manufacturing process documents
  • Create jigs and fixtures to improve production efficiency
  • Help create and maintain production routing steps and timing
  • Assist in Rev Control and documentation verification
  • Ensure production techniques and capacity scale with growing demand

Requirements For Manufacturing Engineer I

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Engineering (Optical, Mechanical, Production, etc.), or equivalent
  • Basic computer knowledge including Solidworks, Microsoft products, and Axapta
  • Experience with manufacturing, configuration management, and product development in R&D
  • Experience with quality improvement tools (Lean, Six Sigma, Process Control, FMEA)
  • Familiarity with optics and fabrication of glasses and crystal for optical components
  • Strong ability to work in a group atmosphere
  • Experience using standard measurement equipment
  • Strong attention to detail
