Thorlabs, a global leader in optical technologies, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for their facility in Ely, UK. This role combines innovative design work with practical implementation in the field of precision motion control and optical systems. The position offers a hybrid working arrangement at their new purpose-built facility in Witchford, Ely, just 12 miles from Cambridge.

The ideal candidate will bring 5 years of mechanical engineering expertise, focusing on precision component design and manufacturing. You'll be responsible for designing and improving mechanical mechanisms for precision motion control and vibration isolation systems, working with cutting-edge technology in photonics and optical systems.

The role offers significant growth opportunities through in-house customized training and development programs. You'll be part of a global organization with 22 facilities across 9 countries, specifically working in the Motion Control and Optical Tables product line. The company provides a comprehensive benefits package including pension, healthcare, and generous holiday allowance.

Working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with hybrid working options available. The location offers excellent connectivity with train and bus links from London Kings Cross and Liverpool Street. Responsibilities For Mechanical Design Engineer-919

  • Design and improve mechanical mechanisms for precision motion control and vibration isolation systems
  • Develop, assemble, test and evaluate theoretical designs
  • Produce detailed specifications from data analysis
  • Review technical challenges with team members and stakeholders
  • Implement Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Ensure Design for Compliance implementation
  • Plan and oversee product development
  • Manage cost, compliance, safety and time constraints

Requirements For Mechanical Design Engineer-919

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience/qualifications
  • Experience in product development with proven record of released products
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary project team
  • Understanding of machinery directive safety legislation and compliance regulations
  • Experience with 3D and 2D modelling software
  • Experience producing high quality manufacturing drawings
  • Experience with precision component design to micron level tolerances
  • Strong grasp of materials selection
  • Ability to multitask and work independently
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems quickly
