Description For Senior Research Engineer (Optics)

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance. WHOOP empowers users to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.

As a Senior Research Engineer (Optics) at WHOOP, you will be an integral part of a cross-functional team working alongside experts in DSP, WHOOP Labs, Hardware, Data Science, and Soft Goods. You will work on the core, fundamental features at WHOOP. This role will be tasked with solving the incredibly difficult technical problem of obtaining physiological information from noisy sensor data, as well as enhancing diagnostic tools and control methodologies.

You will work closely with Hardware and Research teams to develop innovative next-generation hardware, ensuring that the product works properly across our diverse user population. Your responsibilities will include identifying issues related to data and data quality, developing and validating mathematical optical models, characterizing optical properties of biomaterials, building and testing optical platforms for biomaterials and human subjects, and creating innovative algorithms to enhance bio-optical system performance.

This role requires a Master's or PhD degree in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field, with 3+ years of industry or research experience in medical devices, bio-optics, and/or tissue optics. You should have a strong background and hands-on experience with bio-optical systems and optical modeling, as well as experience partnering with sensor hardware engineering teams.

Join us in pushing the boundaries of wearable technology and positively impacting people's lives! This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA, and the successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary.

WHOOP values diversity and encourages all interested candidates to apply, even if they don't meet every qualification. We believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper, and we value character as much as experience.
