Member of Technical Staff

xAI is on a mission to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. Our small, highly motivated team focuses on engineering excellence and operates with a flat organizational structure. We're looking for individuals who thrive on curiosity and appreciate challenging themselves.

As a Member of Technical Staff, you'll work across multiple areas, contributing directly to the company's mission. We value initiative, consistent excellence, strong work ethic, and prioritization skills. Communication is key – you should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with teammates.

Our tech stack includes Python, JAX and XLA, and Rust. You'll be involved in training trillion parameter neural networks, mastering various data modalities, implementing state-of-the-art methods, and innovating new ideas to bring us closer to our goal.

Ideal experiences include building distributed training systems for AI models in HPC clusters, working with JAX/XLA for multi-host training, and digging into third-party source code for debugging and customization.

The role is based in the Bay Area (San Francisco and Palo Alto), and candidates are expected to be located nearby or open to relocation. Our interview process is thorough and efficient, typically completed within a week, consisting of a phone interview followed by technical interviews and a project deep-dive.
