Plan to switch jobs because work culture isn't great

Hi,

Here is my earlier post about work culture in the current role. While it’s frustrating, I’m staying because I rely on the income to support my living expenses and maintain health insurance. How can I plan and prepare for my next job while ensuring these challenges don’t take a toll on my mental health?

Thank you in advance for all your help!

If you really need space and time and have the money to pay for rent/mortgage for a few months, you can try applying for FMLA & using that leave to study for your next job.

Jonathan, I haven't heard of FMLA. This is good to know. Thank you for sharing this.

The vast majority of the time, engineers switch jobs without having a gap in employment, i.e. they have their next offer teed up while they are working at their current job. Are you not able to do that? It's certainly tough, but it's possible. You'll need to carve out some time after work and on weekends and save some PTO days for the onsite/final round interviews.

When it comes to succeeding in what is effectively "survival" mode, there are 2 components:

    1. Define clear expectations - The formula here is pretty simple. First, talk to your manager about what it takes to meet expectations. Second, do that with 5-10% extra for buffer (just in case). Devote whatever remaining time you have left into personal life, side projects, interview prep, etc.
    2. Get more from your time - The more impact you can land per unit of time spent, the more free time you'll have after executing #1. Follow the advice from here: [Course] Maximize Your Productivity As A Software Engineer

@Alex Chiou, I can look for a new job while in this current job. I didn't have any gap while switching to this job. The "survival" mode tips you shared are helpful. I will try them.

      Thank you!
