I'm originally from India. I started working in the US from 2021. My team in the Bay Area is pretty talented and I have been learning a lot from them. I am considering if I should move back to India at some point down the line. I'm worried about the career opportunities in India though.
Given most companies have their headquarters here, Bay Area has plenty of L5, L6, L7 engineers tackling massive scope. Does India also have many Staff+ engineering roles dealing with massive projects? Or are the opportunities in India mostly restricted to L3-L5 levels?
Pros:
- Savings will be lot more as the salary for Staff+ roles are really good in India as of now.
- House help.
- Food options.
- Closer to parents and relatives and most importantly friends.
- Can work from cool locations (if remote)
Cons:
- Be ready to work across timezones, leading to poor WLB
- Work culture in India is still struggling because most of the middle managers are just micromanaging and delegating things as they have little or no technical knowledge also lots of politics.
- Very difficult to switch companies(demand/supply)
I put some thoughts on things like economics, infrastructure, environment here: Choosing location over career and money
(I've never lived/worked in India, though, so my opinions are based off talking to others!)
