Hi, I'm a SDE2 level software engineer from India. My parent's health is poor, and I can't leave my town for that reason. However, there's no tech scene at this place, so what would you suggest I do?
Sorry to hear about your parents - Family comes first, so it's definitely the right call to stay with them. 🙏
When it comes to getting remote job, it's important to understand that the demand is far higher than the supply, especially with Big Tech's overwhelming push to RTO. When it comes to advice, I don't think this drastically changes how you approach the job search. You just need to make extra sure that you excel and get things right:
Another option for creating a remote job is to do extremely well at an in-person or hybrid job and then working with your manager to get a remote exception. I have several mentees who were able to do that, including at Meta where almost everyone has been forced onto 3-days per week hybrid now. In general, sustained performance and trust are super valuable and let you do things that weren't otherwise possible before.
There's a lot that goes into what it takes to perform at a job and make your manager love you that much, but if I were to pick just 1 resource, I recommend starting off with this: "What's the core insight behind quick growth?"
In terms of which top companies are still doing remote work, here's a couple that I know from Taro community members recently getting into them or going through their loop:
On top of that, we have a job board with 2,000+ remote jobs spanning the entire globe, many of which are in India. It's 100% free (you don't even need a Taro account). Check it out here: https://www.jointaro.com/jobs/?selectedWorkStyle=Remote
There are some dedicated platforms for remote job opportunities, e.g. RemoteRocketship available on the Taro Perks page: https://www.jointaro.com/perks/
Longer term, it's about networking, and networking is about adding value. See the very relevant talk from the Twitter Eng Director about networking so you never have to apply for a job.
