How to plan out complex projects?

I want to understand how people approach planning/scoping out complex projects with multiple unknowns and potential blockers.
Also, how do you effectively communicate to leadership when working on such projects? What matters to them the most? Do the updates need to be dense?

I'd recommend going through the case study (and real design doc) that Alex covers in System Design Masterclass: Shipping Real Features To Production.
- Start with the problem you're trying to achieve. State the goals and non-goals
- Anticipate questions/objections you might get and provide responses in your doc
- Over-communicate: provide regular updates and tag relevant people
