I just joined linkedin as Senior software engineer with 7 years of experience. I want to become staff engineer ASAP. When should i tell my manager about my expectations? How to approach this?

For the first 3 months, focus on earning the trust of your team and you successfully ramp up (our onboarding guide). The tactic I recommend is "date for date": tell your manager that you want to discuss your career growth and promotion in April once you've understood how the team works and what the priorities are.

You want to avoid two extremes when it comes to promotion:

    • Quickly demanding a promotion as a new engineer, without properly understanding the team priorities and your role. (I found this quite annoying as a manager.)
    • Fear of appearing too demanding, and therefore not advocating for yourself in terms of career growth.

I left some detailed thoughts here: How soon should I start thinking about promotion?
