Is it fine to quit soon after joining the company when you get better offer?

I have couple of interviews lined up with Meta, DataStax and couple more. But, I did not get any interview call from my other desired SW companies like Google/Netflix/Microsoft/DataBricks/AirBnb. I am confident that I will receive call for interview after I improve my resume, polish LinkedIn, reach out via DMs on LinkedIn (already doing that but no luck so far). Also, I can not wait indefinitely for other companies call (already waiting since November).

So my question is,

  1. Is it fine if I join a company such as A and quit within a month or two provided I have a job offer from B (which is obviously more lucrative).
  2. Are there any downsides of switching too soon in tech. I feel changing employers quickly will help me to boost my overall compensation.

Note: I am currently on work visa and working for AWS US as senior backend engineer.

Given your visa situation, I think it'd be good to stick it out for some time at Amazon. Your number one goal should be to buy time as someone on a work visa. It's like playing poker or trading stocks: never get completely wiped out. If your visa expires, it'll be way harder to find another job in the states.

IMO visa >>>> compensation right now. If you find another company willing to sponsor you though, then yes the visa situation is taken care of and then you can get greedy on compensation.

**In case others have further input, how bad is the compensation difference? I think it's okay if your comp is lower than the "average" people on Levels.fyi

Thanks Elliot. I am wondering why do I need to stick with Amazon when future employers sponsors the work visa (which all companies I mention does - note I am on H1b). I understand it may get difficult after Trump taking over but not to the level that can affect big companies (like FAANG).

Yes, all employers I am talking to sponsors work visa.

The main point is to always line something up as you never want to be in that OPT phase. You can do this! 💪

You can definitely do it, but keep in mind that the company you rapidly jump ship from will likely blacklist you forever. More thoughts here: "Team matches and accepting/reneging offer"

If you are only at a company for like 1 month, you can hack your resume/LinkedIn a bit and just remove that tiny stint. It will be a red flag for future employers.

    Best of luck!

    1. Yes
    2. If you ditch a smaller company, you might run the risk for getting blacklisted from that company's network. Other than that, just leave the 1-2 month stint off your resume and it'll be fine.
