Work hours for internship

I will be interning at Meta for this summer. I know Meta engineers collaborate via a tool called Workplace. Based on what I have heard, it seems to be normal for engineers to work over 50 hours a week.

I was wondering if there is a preferred time window when I should be online and engaged on Workplace. More specifically, should I be active on Workplace during the evening hours after 5 pm, or is this unnecessary for an intern?

Thank you for your help!

AFAIK, this is extremely team-dependent. Some managers may leave comments on your diffs post 5 PM, but they don't expect immediate fixes on the same day (especially if you're an intern). Communicate expectations for your internship with your manager and ensure you can deliver high-quality code (in line with engineering excellence axis).

It is common for all engineers at Meta to work 50+ hour weeks, and this is even more true now. For interns where Meta is their first FAANG-level company, this is often the case as they need to adjust rapidly to the high engineering bar.

In terms of hours to work:

    • Work whatever hours you need to get stuff done
    • Overlap with your team as much as possible
    • Prioritize being in sync with your intern manager and other engineers who review your diffs + answer your questions
