I am currently working at Airbnb as a contractor for 1 year through a services-based company, with 6 months already passed. I am looking to increase my chances of transitioning to a full-time employee. I am working on a high-visibility project with a small team of 3-4 engineers and one tech lead, and my work is well-regarded by senior engineers and managers. However, I feel there are areas where I could improve, such as generating new ideas for projects and contributing to the roadmap. The next 6 months of plans have already been created by the tech lead. Historically, others from my company who transitioned to full-time roles took at least a year. How can I increase my chances of converting to a full-time role?
Converting from contractor to FTE is effectively a promotion. The process is more or less the same:
I talk about all this in my promotion course here: [Course] Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer
Airbnb is such a good company - I hope you're able to convert!
Since you're part of a services-based company, the best thing you can do is work closely with full-time engineers and managers at Airbnb.
In most cases, contractors are working in a silo with other contractors, so I'd spend a lot of your time figuring out how you can interact more with FTEs. Express your desire to transition full-time into Airbnb and ask them what feedback they have for you.
