How to switch teams?

I'm scared to make any moves because I don't want it to look bad. At my job I'm not allowed to just go do work for other teams

I would also describe my relationship with my manager as okay okay. I would say im more like between meets all expectations - exceeds expectations

I have no idea where to start and how to go about this. I'm also worried my manager might find out im trying to switch teams and that will backfire severely. But also I dont want to tell him im trying to switch teams and then if I dont itll look awkward

Unfortunately, a lot of team switches need to happen in secret. The logic is generally this:

    • If you have a good relationship with your manager - You tell them you want to leave, and in your conversation, make it clear that you appreciate everything they've done for you and have a general "It's not you, it's me" vibe. They might even help you coordinate the move (this happened to me at Meta).
    • If you have a not good relationship with your manager - You need to approach other hiring managers directly and work with them. You will probably have to go through a full interview loop. After you lock in an offer from another team, you just give your 2 weeks notice and vanish into the sunset.

Outside of Google, Meta, and Amazon, I've generally heard that internal team switching is quite hard (Google and Meta don't make you interview again). And in this economy, internal team switches are even harder to come by as companies are being very conservative right now.

The sucky part is that most managers will retaliate against a report they know is trying to leave them as it undermines their power. This is a crappy way of looking at the world, but that's just how it is.
