Full-Time Return Offer from Amazon, Google Internship Interview in Process

First of all, thank you guys for making these wonderful courses on Taro. The courses on Onboarding, Internships, Code Quality, and Promotions really helped me shine in my internship.

After my internship, my manager gave me "Strong Hire"; however, I was scared that headcount will be an issue so I applied to some other internships from different companies as "backup" (I planned to graduate an year later if I didn't get the return offer).

Luckily, I received a full-time return offer from Amazon. Now, I am in the interview loop for Google Internship. I am wondering what I should do:

  1. Tell my Google Recruiter that I got an Amazon offer and don't waste their time.
  2. Do the Google interview, and if I get the offer, go to Google for an internship before joining Amazon full time
  3. Do the Google interview, and if I get the offer, reject the offer.

Additional context:

  • My team at Amazon is amazing. I love working with software architecture, and the hours are really good. However, promotions are on the slower end. It seems like people from my team are getting promoted in 2.5-3 years.
  • The location of Amazon will be in Vancouver (where I grew up - I don't need to pay rent), the location of Google is either Toronto or Montreal (where I will need to pay rent)

Thank you for the kind words about the courses! I'm really glad they were helpful 😊

Do the Google interview, and if I get the offer, go to Google for an internship before joining Amazon full time

How feasible is this? If you can just sort of get an Google internship along the way to your Amazon role without any real friction, that seems good (it's just more experience and you can potentially unlock Google FTE).

Amazon's a great company of course, but I do put Google above it. I'm unsure how the comps are different in Canada though. In some markets, the difference is real wide (usually in Google's favor).

That being said, a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush (arguably more). Just make sure not to jeopardize your Amazon return offer. Yes, Amazon promotions are slow, especially for SDE 2 -> SDE 3, but I'm sure you could do SDE 1 -> SDE 2 pretty quickly, especially with the help of this: [Course] Grow From Junior To Mid-Level Engineer: L3 To L4

From what I've seen, junior to mid-level promotion speed at Amazon is more inline with peer companies. Mid-level to senior is what makes Amazon particularly brutal.

Hey! Thank you so much for your reply! Sorry for being late on mine, following your advice, I decided to follow through with the Google interview and spent my time studying LC.

For more context on doing a Google internship before joining Amazon, I would be delaying my start date by 3 months (which is still within the start date range they gave).

I like option 2 (Do the Google interview, and if I get the offer, go to Google for an internship before joining Amazon full time) if you're ok with spending the time for the interview.

This gives you an "insurance policy" if Amazon rescinds their offer. You also get to expand your network to Google engineers, which is very valuable.

Hey! Thank you so much for your reply! I like the idea of option 2 too. However, that will delay my Amazon start date by 3 months (still within the start date range they gave).

Would this increase the risk of rescinding the offer?

Additionally, would this potentially slow down my first promotion to mid-level by quite a bit?

I imagine it would slow down that first promotion by at least 3 months, haha.

Overall, delaying the start date to do the internship makes this pretty awkward. I'm now leaning against it, especially as you really like your Amazon team.

Thank you for all your thoughts! I think that's what I'll do!

Side note: I did pass the Google technical interview, and it was the funnest interview I ever had—hopefully I can pass it again in the future!
