Zuck is "turning up the heat" for employee performance. Unsure what this means and what I should do.

It's hard to figure out what's going on right now; there's just a lot being said like that some Meta employees "don't belong here", it's time to "turn up the heat", and "low performers" need to be weeded out (I would have thought this was already the case at Meta?).

At the end of the day, I just want to figure out what this means when it comes to employee performance and PSC in particular. I've heard from some managers and engineers that the ratings will be upshifted (e.g. you need old EE to get MA), but I've talked to my manager and they said that this won't happen. But if that's the case, how will the performance review system change?

Any tips on what concretely could be happening and what we can do here to adjust to these changes?

    • There are 2 ways I see things changing:
      • Ratings upshift: This is the most intuitive one, but I don't see it being as extreme as EE -> MA. At later levels (i.e. E5+), EE is already a huge lift and having that turn into MA would be extremely brutal. If rating upshift were the case, I think it would be just inter-band, so MA+ would become regular MA. This means that MA- would become MM+.
      • Less 2nd chances: I have seen a lot of employees get MM and then recover. The other option Meta can pursue is having less mercy in these cases. So similar how 1 MS almost always means you're out, 1 MM would also spell the end for your time at Meta. This would cut low performers out faster as opposed to giving them the opportunity to languish for another half.
    • So what can you do?
      • Continue having an honest dialog with your manager: This doesn't seem like something you can ask about every week as nobody seems to know exactly what's going on, but I would definitely follow up on this once a month, especially once Q4 rolls around. You don't want to wait until December to find out about concrete PSC changes as at that point, it's hard to change your rating.
      • Leave Meta: It pains me to say this as I truly believe (or believed) that Meta is one of the absolute best places to work, but this recent announcement is just terrible all around. Meta is already a hard company to perform at, and it's likely only going to get worse (at the very least, your stress level will go up).
