Hi, I recently got an offer for mid-level Software Engineer role from Meta, London. While I'm really excited about the opportunity, due to some personal reason, it's not possible for me to move to London and I'm preferring to work either remotely or any location from India.
Is it possible to convince my hiring manager for working remotely?
Would really appreciate some pointers on this.
Given Meta's much more intense nature (especially after the 2024 US election), it is effectively impossible for you to sidestep the RTO requirement. E4s are also pretty replaceable - From what I've heard, you can only negotiate a remote exception as an external hire if you're at least E6 (Staff). For internal, very high-performing E5s can do it (I know this as I have mentees who did this).
You can still try but go into it knowing that your chance of success is <1%.
Best of luck and congrats on passing the Meta interview! Definitely an accomplishment.
IMO the question to ask is, "what are my options?" since you don't have much control over what Meta will say:
If they agree to remote work (no harm in asking!), you are set :)
If they don't agree to remote work (likely):
You'll have a higher chance of success in getting what you want once you've been on the team for a few months and established some trust.

Thanks Rahul, that makes a lot of sense! I'm leaning towards joining and then evaluating my options - if I can work something out with my manager or look outside for another opportunity.
Just in case I leave few months after joining, would I need to give up sign on bonus or some portion of it?
Yes, you'd have to give up a pro-rated portion of your signing bonus. So if your signing bonus was $50K, and you left after 3 months, you'd have to return $37.5K.
(I'm not sure how taxes work, but you should be careful about that as well.)
