I have a stable job with a good salary, consistent increments, a healthy work-life balance, and strong trust within my company. However, I feel dissatisfied with my technical skills as an engineer and my ability to perform well in interviews. As I plan for my future, should I focus more on improving my technical engineering skills or sharpening my interviewing skills? P.S I suck at both.
The best interview skill to acquire is to be a great SDE.
Interview preparation is something you need every now and then, and for a limited time period. While being in possession of great SDE skills, is a lifetime benefit.
So I would say, work on your self, get better, and prepare for interviews in the same time, just don't get sucked too much into it, that you forget the actual goal: Change companies to help you be a better SDE.
It's great that you have a well-paying job with solid work-life balance and supportive teammates - I imagine the vast majority of engineers aren't in a situation as good as yours given the current market. Congrats!
If you feel like you aren't learning that much though and you have stayed at your role for 1 year+, there's nothing wrong with looking outwards. It doesn't have to be aggressive either as job searching is a spectrum - You can send 1 application a week or 100 or something in between.
When it comes to interviewing and just getting better overall, we are going to create curated learning paths for both of them. In the meantime, I recommend these courses to start:
