Evaluating offers: FAANG vs unicorn

tldr - is it worth giving up brand name (amazon) for higher pay and potentially better work culture, especially if long term goal is entrepreneurship?

Hi Taro community! I'm hoping to get some guidance from those who have navigated similar career decisions. I have two new grad offers and am trying to evaluate them strategically based on my longer-term goals.

Background:

  • CS degree from top university
  • Multiple SWE internship experiences
  • Strong interest in understanding business impact beyond just coding
  • Naturally drawn to product/business side but also enjoy technical challenges
  • Want to eventually move into entrepreneurship/product roles while building strong technical foundation

The offers (both in-person in canada):

  1. Amazon
  • Base: 79k USD, TC: 112k USD (minimal initial stock vesting)
  • Pro: Strong brand name, good learning opportunity
  • Con: Team allocation uncertain, heard mixed experiences about WLB
  1. BitGo (crypto/blockchain infrastructure)
  • Base: 115k USD, TC: 125k USD
  • Many ex-FAANG engineers
  • Smaller company but established product
  • More direct access to leadership/decision-making

My questions:

  1. How much does FAANG experience actually matter for future career flexibility (especially if interested in entrepreneurship/product roles)?
  2. For those at Amazon - how much control do you really have over team placement? Are there strategies to land on teams with:
    • Good WLB
    • Product-minded tech leads
    • Opportunities to understand business impact
    • Growth-oriented culture Or is it purely luck?
  3. For those who've worked at both large tech and smaller companies - what are the key tradeoffs in terms of learning opportunities and career growth? Especially interested in hearing from those who later moved into entrepreneurship or product roles.
  4. Any red flags I should look for during team matching/final conversations that might indicate poor team culture?

Would really appreciate insights from those who've navigated similar decisions or transitioned between these types of roles. Looking to optimize for both technical growth and exposure to product/business thinking.

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Thinking from a future perspective, higher pay helps in your plans for entrepreneurship.

But, you leaving on the table Amazon name in your resume, huge learning opportunity, and most importantly, exposure to product.

I would not worry about team culture, leave that to when you actually get placed there, and it's not hard to change teams inside Amazon.

    Regarding your questions:

    1. It matters a lot, it gives you relatively high pay, and possible exposure to product teams, and working closely with them.
    2. You typically don't have control over placement once you get in, but if you are in good standing it's very easy to transfer internally.
    3. I haven't moved to entrepreneurship role, but I have worked in both FAANG and smaller companies. Smaller companies best trait is speed, FAANG companies excel in all (Learning chances, higher exposure, huge scale...)
    4. Typical oncall load, average time for SDEs in level within the team, and type of product they work on (product/cost centre)

thanks. everyone says amazon does not negotiate salary for new grads, but what if you have competing offer? are they open to negotiate? in my case bitgo's base pay is higher than amazon's TC.

It always doesn't hurt to try. I would attempt it for sure.

ok thanks. also how practical is it to switch internally from a software engineer role to a product manager role? tbh PM role fits my interests and strengths better

but i believe since i am a new grad i might have to earn their trust first before making the request

Yes, it happens, but I would say it's more common to transition to TPM.

I actually think top unicorns are better than FAANG as you get both the stability and money, but your situation is a bit tricky. BitGo seems like a very good company; however, I wouldn't put it in that highest tier (I personally haven't heard of it). As for what I think is in that highest tier, Notion is a great example IMHO (OpenAI and Anthropic don't really count as I consider them Big Tech given how they're funded). Between Notion and Amazon, I would recommend 99.9% of the time that the person take Notion.

I am slightly leaning towards Amazon, but I don't think you can really go wrong here with either offer. With the 2024 US election, the crypto market is definitely going to heat up (Trump is pretty much a crypto bro now), so BitGo's prospects are promising.

My advice is to listen to your gut. Which hiring manager did you enjoy talking more with? Just go to them. At the end of the day, manager and team quality are the most important thing, far more than the company overall.

thanks Alex. one more thing i did not mention in my post - all my internships were in frontend and I have minimal backend experience. Both of these roles at amazon and bitgo are backend heavy. Since Bitgo operates like a startup and moves fast, I believe their expectation is that a new hire ramps up super fast and start contributing immediately (that's the vibe I got from talking to a couple hiring managers). At amazon, I heard there are structured training programs to ramp up new hires so the onboarding process is more smooth / relatively less mentally taxing than a startup.

From this aspect too, maybe Amazon would be a better fit? What do you think?

Now I'll go through your questions 1 by 1.

How much does FAANG experience actually matter for future career flexibility (especially if interested in entrepreneurship/product roles)?

A lot. Brand names are powerful. I think Amazon wins here as BitGo is a smaller-end unicorn ($1.75B).

For those who've worked at both large tech and smaller companies - what are the key tradeoffs in terms of learning opportunities and career growth? Especially interested in hearing from those who later moved into entrepreneurship or product roles.

I've done both, and I put really detailed thoughts here: "What's the difference between Big Tech and startups in terms of learning and growth?"

Any red flags I should look for during team matching/final conversations that might indicate poor team culture?

I recommend this: "How possible is it to spot red flags about toxic culture during the interview?"

Dang the TC is quite low. new grads generally get in the 150-180k range in US, not sure how it is in canada. I def think you can negotiate here

yeah canada market sucks. i hope i can negotiate amazon using bitgo's offer, altho from what i have heard they typically don't negotiate for new grads

keeping money aspect aside, do you think amazon better supports my entrepreneurial goals?

If you want to be a founder, it's better to work for a smaller company instead of a bigger one as the experience will transfer over better.

At FAANG, the work is largely ultra-incremental, especially for junior and mid-level engineers.
