looking for 1:1 mentor

not sure if this is the right place to ask but recently i landed a new grad job at a fast growing startup and i am a bit anxious especially about navigating the first few months into the job where i have to onboard, build relationships, understand complex codebase etc

i do have a manager but am not sure how transparent i can be with him compared to with a personal mentor (eg if i don't feel confident about my swe skills i cannot explicitly tell that to my manager)

hence i am looking for a mentor that can help guide the first few months. i am only a new grad so would appreciate it if the rates are affordable :)

thanks!

I'd start with looking for a mentor in your company, ideally a mid-level or senior engineer who is on an adjacent team. This allows you to be a bit more honest (they don't directly control your comp/perf rating), and they'll be more in the weeds with coding.

I'd also recommend finding an "Onboarding Buddy" as I talk about in the course here.

If you want something external to the company (there is value in this since they can be more unbiased), there are many coaching services out there. We have an interest form at https://jointaro.com/membership which you could fill out.

On top of Rahul's great tactical advice, the main way for a mentee to attract a mentor from my experience (both as the mentee and the mentor) is to aggressively add value to others in a public way. I break down many ways to do that here: "How does one attract a sponsor who is invested in their growth?"

I don't think you should pay for mentorship as good mentorship is very expensive. Engineer time is extremely valuable - Even the junior engineer at FAANG in the US has an hourly compensation around $100/hour. Try to find a mentor organically within your company first, especially as they will be a more effective mentor than anybody you can find on the outside anyways.
