How to fit in the current role and org?

I joined as a senior engineer and have been mostly working on ops, and I feel like I'm losing my edge as a developer. It's getting incredibly hard to find place in the core teams where actual work is being done. Tech and leadership skills expectations are off the charts. Also it's incredibly hard to find jobs in the AI driven market and the interview process of competitive coding.

Is it time to pivot the roles? I love building applications and problem solving but am unable to influence in the current org.

    You have the following options:

    • Talk to your manager about getting more fulfilling work - If you have at least a decent relationship with your manager, I would pursue this path. Frame this as a mutual benefit ("I want to have more impact by taking on more ambitious work"). Yeah, this conversation could be awkward, but 1 on 1s should be awkward.
    • Switch teams - Based on what you've said, I assume this is hard, but I would try it anyways.
    • Switch companies - This is the nuclear option. Given that market, switching jobs entirely is a huge grind and quite an unpleasant experience overall. I would pursue the first 2 before trying this. If this is what you want to do though, check out our learning path here: Land Your Dream Job In Tech
