Recruiter Asking What Level I Am

I’m currently an entry level engineer with 3 years of experience. I’m afraid when I look for another job, the recruiters will ask me what level I am and get down leveled. Is this something I should be worrying about? If the recruiters ask me such question, how should I respond?

Honestly, I would just say that you're a software engineer. It is tricky though if you work at a Big Tech company though with clear, known levels and they specifically ask something like if you're Amazon SDE 1 or Amazon SDE 2.

There's some nice communication tricks here too: "Recruiter asking what my current level is when applying for new roles - how to answer?"

I talk about this a bit in the negotiation course: Don't Overshare (Level, Passion, Timeline)

Vagueness is your friend. Some sample dialog you can use:

    Just refuse to answer:

I'm more interested in getting to know the company and evaluating the mutual fit. I'm sure we can figure out the appropriate level later on.

Talk about how your scope/work is effectively at a mid-level:

I've been the owner for this workstream for the past X months and I'm the point person for this feature.

Focus on the future instead of the past:

I'm targeting mid-level engineering roles. I'm in the interview loop for mid-level at the other companies I'm interviewing at

I try to not reveal my level at first and rather talk about my scope at work

If recruiter is too pushy, I will tell the level at which I want to get hired and convince that I am already operating at similar scope
