Observations after watching the time management course:
I’ve noticed the focus block really takes a lot of activation energy and then it eventually gets smooth. Hence why I think I get the point why it should take 4 hr minimum.
Are you saying that’s how it should feel and therefore that’s why you need a super long block?
I honestly feel this is correlated with sleeping properly cuz then I have the energy to overcome this activation energy.
Is this usually how most productive engineers view productivity and how the focus block fits in?
A focus block should feel exhausting (in a good way!) -- you're mentally engaging your brain for longer than you're probably comfortable.
But I've grown to crave that exhaustion. It's powerful to reframe the discomfort as growth. Mo Tiwari (AI researcher) talks about this as well in his talk: https://www.jointaro.com/event/efficiency-tips-for-engineers-from-an-openai-researcher-stanford-phd/
Yep, you nailed it! This is why Meta/Robinhood made it an entire day with no-meeting Wednesday. It generally takes 1-2 hours to really get into the groove.
Good feeling about the sleep portion as well - I 100% agree with that. If you got terrible sleep prior to your focus block, that block is going down the drain 🫠
